I need a leave in thermometer for thanksgiving and decided to buy one of these to try out. I already own wired one but the wires get in the way and I don't like threading it through the oven gasket because it eventually wears the gasket out in that area. Also, having to rotate the food in the oven always causes things to tangle and it's just messy trying to untangle wires while holding a hot baking sheet. I always see these wireless leave in thermometers on YouTube and decided this year was the year to try one out.I didn't expect too much... after all, it's just a leave in thermometer where the probe is wireless and the price was a little bit cheaper than the competitors. The package came nicely packed. It is USB-C based and includes a USB charging cable. You charge the base station that is used to both store and charge the actual probe. It's pretty easy to use. You just take the probe out, stick in into the meat until a certain depth and set the temperature. You can set this on the base station or there's an app that you can download that you can do it though. I did try the app and it does connect and shows the temperature, but found that I didn't need to use the app because there's a small screen right on the base station that tells you everything you need to know.It seemed accurate. I was comparing the read temperature against what I measured using a different temperature probe, and they were always within 1F of each other. It also seems to broadcast pretty far. I was still able to get signal even behind a couple of walls.Clean up was easy. Just remove the probe and wipe clean, and put it back into the base to charge again. I'm thinking about getting a second probe. I don't have another wireless probe to compare this to but this does the job well and I'm excited to try this out on a long smoke session of a brisket.
I bought this to use in my smoker for low and slow cooks but decided to give it a test run on some grilled chicken breast. The probe is pretty long and needs to be inserted all the way up to the black band. If you are cooking a smaller cut of meat this could be an issue. Apparently, only the rear tip of the probe is rated for extreme heat, and below the black band is rated for 212F.I tested the reported probe temperature vs two different meat thermometers. This Panceia BT thermometer was consistently 2 degrees lower than the other two, which were consistent with each other. I suppose it's good to read low instead of high, otherwise you might not reach the desired temp. I'm not sure if it can be calibrated, I didn't see this in the instructions. The probe housing unit needs to stay next to the grill. It transmits the BT signal to the phone app (more on the app in a second). I could get the unit about 25 feet from the grill and probe before it lost connection. With the unit on the grill shelf, my phone kept a constant connection through two walls inside my house.Now... the app. It is a bit sketchy. The listed developer email is some random Gmail account with clearly a Chinese name translated into English. Google Play says the developer has reported that the app doesn't gather any personal data, but can you really trust that? I'd feel better if this claim was audited and confirmed by a third party. I installed the app on my old Android phone that I factory reset and has no personal data on it.That said, the app is simple, intuitive, and most importantly works well.Overall this is a pretty good thermometer, given a couple of things they could fix or work on. I'll continue to use it and am looking forward to those overnight smokes at the campground this summer!
Overall, this wireless meat thermometer does what's implied. You can read the temperature of food cooking on the stove, in the oven, or on the grill from afar. It works well and is relatively easy to use for most decently tech-savvy folks. There are a few things to note:-The combined wireless max range of 800 ft is the combination of the connection between the probe and main unit (~300ft), and the main unit and the Bluetooth connection to your phone (~500ft). I personally find just using the main unit to monitor temps is fine, but the Bluetooth app makes sense in some cases. Also keep in mind both connections are subject to wireless interference such as thick walls, other wireless signals, microwaves, etc.-The temp in my experience was not instant read, but was pretty quick. The instructions state to make sure the probe is inserted deep almost up to the line indicated on the probe. This may not be ideal for thinner cuts of meat or other items to cook. For example, I use a probe thermometer to check the temp of homemade bread, which I wouldn't poke in that far. However, not inserting all the way didn't cause me any issues. Some of the pros include:-Easy USB-C recharging-Easy charging of the wireless probe-Easy to read display (which also includes a backlit mode and non-backlit mode to save battery)-Included USB-C to USB-A cable, though these are becoming a dime a dozen and doesn't include a wall plug. I assume it charges 5V 1A.-Decently compact and portable for picnics, events, and easy storage-Easy to use buttons/layoutThe price is a bit much for me to swallow but would definitely make a good gift idea, not only for grilling, but baking and cooking in general.
I bought a bone-in spiral ham for Christmas this year and realized I didn't have a good way of monitoring the temperature. When I went to shop for a meat thermometer I ended up on this one because I could use it in my smoker as well. The temperature probe itself is very simple and easy to clean. The base unit for it has magnets in it so it sticks onto my range hood above the stove no problem and remains stored there when not in use instead of buried in my drawers. I downloaded their app and linked it to my phone and was able to set a Target temperature for the meat. When the target temperature was achieved it alerted my phone. This is going to be great for my smoker since that sits outside and I don't want to keep walking outside the check it especially when it's cold out.The only con that I found when using this isn't really specific to this device. I realized that the range for the probe to be picked up by the base unit was shortened at some point while cooking my ham. I got the base a little closer to the oven and it reestablished link. And then realized that my spiral cut ham was cooking inside of a faraday cage (foil wrapped lol). So if anybody has any issues with the probe remaining connected it probably has something to do with a foil wrapping over top of it. Next time I think I'll just leave the tip of the probe sticking out of the foil.Other than that this thing did exactly what it needed to do and I would recommend it to others.Charging was quick and easy with the included cable. I did notice that it doesn't like charging off of a USB c to USB c cable. Just use the included cable and a regular USB port for best compatibility.
I picked this up as a backup unit to a TempSpike that I've been using the past few months, and boy am I glad I did. Pretty much as soon as this was delivered, my TempSpike stopped working correctly and had to get returned under warranty. So, the Paneceia brand probe was going to be the workhorse for Xmas eve dinner, Xmas dinner, and for reheating a few things for both nights. This came 80% charged, so ready to get going as soon as I took it out of the box. Bluetooth setup to my phone was easy, as were the physical buttons on the base. The probe is a lot slimmer than the TempSpike probe, so it allowed me to use it in more types of meats (think 1" steaks and thin pieces of meat like that). The range worked fine from my smoker out in the garage to the back room of my house (TV room) where I waited while the food was cooking. Didn't have drop outs or any issues like that, but that was about as far as I could use it. The walls and distance further than that caused issues with staying connected. This unit is great if you want one that can be used on its own, or with a phone app. I prefer just having a standalone probe usually so I don't have to mess around with DND settings and app exceptions for overnight cooks, and this was perfect for that. Another nice-to-have with this temp probe was that the base was magnetic and could stick to a fridge, stove hood, or other metal surface. This made it easy to keep this out of the way of other food being prepped for the night. All in all for the price, I'd say this is a 5 out of 5 stars item. It does exactly what I want it to do, has good battery life, easy to use features, and nice range.
